Look, this is just inexcusable, but it happens all the time. The Wachovia branches in New York, for example, show a loop of 2 rotating spots. No news. Coincidentally or otherwise (both Wachovia and BofA use the same vendor for digital signage in New York), Bank of America shows 2-3 spots over and over again, albeit interspersed with news. So as not to discriminate unfairly, Charles Schwab, Chase, Scotiabank, Lloyd's TSB, and many, many others deserve to be called out, too...

I don't understand the practice of displaying Bloomberg or CNN in a bank branch. I can watch those channels and get those updates on my mobile phone. If I’m a retail bank that’s spent five thousand dollars for a flat panel display, I want to use it to drive MY brand, sell MY products, and prepare MY branch employees to become sellers capable of providing useful information to my customers that they cannot get on television. It seems nearly every bank out there is convinced that CNN and Bloomberg can do a better job of selling financial instruments than their employees could do! If I’m in a bank I want something meaningful to me. I don’t work in finance and don’t want bad news! I want to know how whole life insurance works, how I provide income to my grandchildren without taxes, how to finance a second vacation home, or how to use my airline miles for something useful. If television is the answer to my financial concerns, I’ll watch it at home.
